Crazy Crazy Crazy
I'm a social worker. And though when I took this job, I knew all of which it entailed, there is no getting used to watching a 16-year-old boy eat a whole box of ice cream sandwiches for breakfast, while his handicapped Yorky (both hind legs broken) drags itself across the living room floor trying to lick up the drippings of melted ice cream.
The obvious question "Where is your mother?"...is NOT what I ask him. Instead, I just say, "Are you taking your meds?" Then I head for the car...as if I saw nothing strange, at all.

I’m a psychiatrist and some days I just hate what I do. Some patients just want to be miserable and don’t take advantage of the control and power they do have in their own lives. The victim mentality is a killer and dealing with patients that subscribe solely to that as a coping mechanism makes me hate the job. No wonder why I only do this 2.5 days a week and am looking for a way to live off only doing it for 2. Geez!
To the social worker above, yeah, been there. It sucks! What are we really treating, mental illness or the ills of society??? I’m only trained to do the former.
I am with you.. work in the foster care system myself. Some things you just cannot shake.
My day entailed driving 2 hours each way starting at 3:30 AM. Only to have the kid run away from me around 3:30 PM again. Guess where I get to go tomorrow?
I’m a social worker, too. The job is tough and frequently thankless; and, as you so adroitly related, “crazy.” However, you have an obligation to behave ethically and professionally. The profession has enough problems with burnt out professionals and the public image of the useless social worker. NO THANKS TO YOU for your part of making a joke of your job and DISGRACING THE WORK. You should be ashamed of yourself, and should quit, because you obviously are incapable of being effective if your solution to a serious social problem is to pretend like nothing is happening. Try to remember that you ARE GETTING PAID TO HELP PEOPLE, and not ignore their problems. Sometimes we all hate our jobs, but your behavior is unconscionable.
